Lot 2969
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.33 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Antiochia. Irregular mint, after 325. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG / SMANTA Camp gate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 63 (for prototype). Very rare. Somewhat smoothed, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The coin's style unmistakably identifies it as an unofficial contemporary 'barbarous' imitation, modeled after RIC 63 (Antioch). Copies of Antiochene coins are much rarer than those from western mints, but this piece was clearly also minted somewhere in the West.
